In Brazil, it is well known that in the case of undergraduate colleges, it is up to the MEC (Ministry of Education) to analyze the institution, the course and its professors, so that the diploma of a certain course is valid. But is there such a thing as faculty of psychoanalysis And, if so, how to find out if it is valid? Find out now!

What is psychoanalysis?

Psychoanalysis is understood as a therapeutic method created by Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis. In this technique, everything that the patient brings to the consultation in the form of discourse is used, so that problems caused by repressions in the unconscious are worked on and improved.

Furthermore, this method of therapy is used, from the beginning, in cases of neurosis, which is why it is based on the psychoanalyst's interpretation of both speech and dreams. This interpretation is based on free associations and transference. Learn more here!

Can anyone be a psychoanalyst?

Although training in psychology is recommended in order to better analyze the human mind, anyone with an interest and desire can be a psychoanalyst. To do so, they must be informed and seek a reliable and complete course in psychoanalysis, so that their work may be recognized.

Our course, for example, is supported by the Law of Directives and Bases of National Education (Law n° 9394/96), by Federal Decree n° 2.494/98 and Decree n° 2.208, of 17/04/97. Besides, it counts on a complete theoretical base, besides analysis and supervision!

Is there a Faculty of Psychoanalysis?

In the case of Psychoanalysis, no undergraduate or graduate school of psychoanalysis The only course that, in a way, is related to psychoanalysis and has a degree, is Psychology. However, a degree in Psychology is not the same as a course in Psychoanalysis.

Freud and the great psychoanalysts always defended Psychoanalysis as a lay or secular science. That is, it could not be restricted to doctors and psychologists. Freud considered, for example, that professionals from humanities or arts had full capacity to be analysts. There are many professionals from different areas, such as undergraduate studies, who are psychoanalysts.

So, in Brazil:

  • to be a psychoanalyst : take a free training course (in person or online) at an Institute in the area (like ours), lasting from 12 to 18 months;
  • to be a psychologist : take a psychology degree (face-to-face only) in a college, lasting 4 to 5 years.

By this tradition, in Brazil and in most countries of the world, three things are required to become a psychoanalyst:

1. Make a Psychoanalysis Training Course This is the case of our EAD Training in Psychoanalysis, which is now open for registration.

After completing the course, the person is not obliged to work in the field. After all, he or she can use the knowledge from the Training for his or her life, to add to his or her profession, to improve his or her relationships, etc. If he or she chooses to practice, it is recommended:

2. Continue studying Freud and authors of psychoanalysis, through courses and books.

3. Follow as making your personal analysis That is, to do analysis in the condition of the analyzed, in order to work on his own questions and avoid projecting them onto his patients.

4. Follow as supervised This is important in order to discuss with other professionals the cases you are attending to, of course, within the confidentiality demanded by professional ethics.

Items 2 to 3 are not mandatory by law, but are recommended for a serious professional performance.

Why do some colleges offer graduate degrees in psychoanalysis?

There is a difference between training courses in Psychoanalysis (like ours) In addition, there are post-graduate or specialization courses in Psychoanalysis offered by universities.

As for the postgraduate course in Psychoanalysis:

  • is offered by colleges,
  • has a fundamentally theoretical focus and
  • does not aim at clinical care practice.

As of this year, 2019, our Course is offering in-person postgraduate specialization in Psychoanalysis, in the city of Campinas (SP). That is, our IBPC is not becoming a "psychoanalysis college", since there is no undergraduate degree in psychoanalysis or psychoanalysis course recognized by MEC, as we have seen.

The postgraduate course in psychoanalysis will be restricted to students and alumni, who have taken our EAD Psychoanalysis Training Course Because it takes place over 6 weekends, students from more distant cities can organize to come and participate in this incredible opportunity for professional growth.

Why is it restricted to distance learning students? Because the subjects studied in distance learning will be taken advantage of, within the limits allowed by MEC and approved in the pedagogical project of the course.

Distance Learning Psychoanalysis Course recognized by MEC: does it exist?

Or, in other words: If there is no faculty of psychoanalysis, how does one become a psychoanalyst?

There is no psychoanalysis course recognized by MEC. There is also no online psychology course recognized by MEC.

After all, the MEC doesn't authorize it:

  • faculty of psychoanalysis neither in person nor online.
  • online college of psychology Only in-person psychology faculty are allowed.

The MEC authorizes it:

  • In-class psychology: on average, it takes 48 months to 60 months, with a monthly fee ranging from R$ 990 to 2,900, and there are places at public universities.
  • post-graduation in psychology or psychoanalysis.

The MEC does not regulate:

  • training courses in Psychoanalysis, which can be freely offered by accredited institutes, as is the case of our Online Training Course in Psychoanalysis .

There are several post-graduate courses of this type throughout Brazil, called latu sensu post-graduation, lasting 12 months to 18 months on average. Examples are:

  • post-graduation in psychoanalysis in RJ,
  • post-graduation in psychoanalysis in SP,
  • In Belo Horizonte, in Porto Alegre, in Florianopolis, and many other capitals of the country.

But, for those who want to work as psychoanalysts, it is not recommended to do a post-graduation course in Psychoanalysis right away .

Postgraduate courses (extension, specialization, master's or doctorate courses) will focus on one part of the tripod: theory. To experience a complete training of the psychoanalytic tripod (theory, supervision and analysis), it is important to take a training course in psychoanalysis, which offers the The complete path for you to work as a psychoanalyst .

Master's in psychoanalysis or Ph.D. in psychoanalysis are in-depth and relevant courses. Master's and Ph.D. are called strictu sensu post-graduation They are offered by far fewer institutions, as a rule, only some public universities offer them. But, despite their quality, they do not focus on clinical practice, so essential for those who want to work as psychoanalysts.

In short, what do you study to be a psychoanalyst anyway?

To become a successful psychoanalyst, it is important that you seek a complete and market-recognized training. This training should cover three areas: theory, analysis and supervision .

When you complete our Training Course, you will have all the theoretical elements and the understanding to become a Psychoanalyst! You will feel fully confident, because our Training is the most complete online training in Brazil, with 12 Modules (theory) and practical accompaniment (analysis and supervision), as well as many supplementary materials.

Always remembering: the training course (even EAD) is essential for those who want to work in the area, while the post-graduation or specialization in psychoanalysis is optional for acting purposes.
