Dungeons & Dragons, better known in Brazil as The Dragon's Lair is an animated series based on a very successful role-playing game.

The role-playing game (RPG) is a very famous game in which players take on character roles and collaboratively create their own narratives. But despite being inspired by RPGs, the game version of The Dragon's Cave was not as successful as it was, so it was canceled before the last episode, which caused outrage among fans

The hypothesis for this cancellation may have been the fine line of adult and often dark themes that existed in the series for that time.

History of The Dragon's Lair

The series tells the story of six teenagers in the 1980s who try to return home after a roller-coaster ride that takes them to the parallel kingdom of the Dragon's Cave. In fact, to this day it is not known if they have actually returned home.

Thus, in the realm of various costumes from The Dragon's Cave, the six are guided by the Master of Wizards who appears giving some advice and then disappears.

In this Kingdom, they fight the evil Avenger and try to return home. However, the episode ends without an exact conclusion, showing only the six youngsters about to make a decision whether or not to return home.

Characters from The Dragon's Lair

The first character is named Robert "Bobby" O'Brien, also called "Barbarian" by the King of Wizards. He is the youngest of the group, as he starts the series at only eight years old. Also, Bobby is the brother of the character Sheila, and his magic weapon is a magic club.

Diana Curry, on the other hand, is called "Acrobat" by the King of the Magicians and is the most powerful in terms of motor skills, having been the junior gymnastics champion in her state for two years in a row. Her magic weapon is a magic baton.

Diana's greatest fear is that she will grow too old and thus be unable to do her acrobatic practices, and the episode "In Search of the Skeleton Warrior" reaffirms the importance of her acrobatic skills.

Eric and Hank

Eric Montgomery is called "Knight" by the Wizard Master and is the grumpy, grumpy character of the group. On the other hand, he is a Spider-Man fan, as can be seen in the episode "The Evil Servant", in which he appears reading a Spider-Man comic book.

In addition, because he talks a lot about himself, there is a lot of information about him throughout the 27 episodes of the series. Despite being very selfish and arrogant, in some situations Eric proves to be courageous by risking his life to protect the group. Not least because his magic weapon is a shield that protects him and his friends against the Avenger's attacks.

Hank Grayson is the oldest of the group (although he is the same age as Eric), as well as the leader (Eric is Hank's replacement leader). Because of this, he is called the Ranger by the King of the Magi, and his magic weapon is a yellow-colored bow.

Pesto and Sheila

Albert "Presto" Sidney is called "Wizard" by the Master of Wizards, but his real name has never actually been revealed, although he is called "Presto". With his glasses and magic that almost always goes wrong, he becomes a studious but fearful and insecure character.

His magic weapon is a magical green hat, which gives him the power to summon random spells, as well as evoke objects, so in order for his hat's magic to work, Presto has to rhyme magic words.

Sheila O'Brien, Bobby's older sister, has been titled "Thief" by the Master of Wizards. Her magic weapon is a cloak that enables her to become invisible. Also, for unknown reasons, Sheila understands the language of the fairies.

The Psychology behind the Dragon's Lair

In a way, the story of The Dragon's Cave serves to make an analogy with our unconscious that always seeks to fill the emptiness we feel by fulfilling desires and meeting challenges. However, these desires and challenges are only satisfied for a certain time, then the emptiness returns again.

If the youngsters reach a so-called cozy and unchallenging world, the story ends. Likewise, so is real life, for if the emptiness and challenges of everyday life end, life also ends and death comes. In this sense, the monsters, wizards, and demons in the story represent the challenges, adventures, and desires.

In this story, the six youngsters represent all those who seek to return home, but who are always driven by new challenges and desires. In this way, the story teaches us to face life with less suffering and more possibilities, whether with magic wands or with a simple and routine waking up in the morning.

Final considerations

The Dragon's Cave is one of the great classics for having a plot full of mysteries that capture the imaginary and the unconscious, because there are young people with personality traits that are similar to ours.

However, at the end of the film it is still worth discussing the dilemma of making the decision to return home or continue living in a parallel world full of challenges. In fact, The Dragon's Cave is thought-provoking and highly recommended for adults.
