In the following text you will see a psychoanalytical analysis of Legião Urbana's song Que País é Este.

The legendary Brazilian rock band originated in Brasilia, started in 1982, and ended its work in 1996 after the death of the legendary and emblematic vocalist Renato Russo. Thirteen albums have been released, which altogether have sold more than 20 million records.

Origin of the Song Que País é Este

The song "Que País é este" was created in 1987 with the album of the same name, written by the band Legião Urbana, released on the EMI label, it sought to portray the perception of the time, the band didn't release it before because they were waiting for changes in the country that didn't happen, and by the way, until today many things haven't changed.

Does music have to do with politics?

This song has short but very significant lyrics using the impact of Rock in relation to protesting Brazilian politics, this relationship occurs in almost every part of it, like in this initial part: "In the slums, in the Senate Dirt everywhere No one respects the Constitution But everyone believes in the future of the nation".

This bringing together the slum and the senate is a very interesting move, because one of the big reasons why there are slums in Brazil is precisely because of the fault of the politicians who manage public money in an inefficient way and many in a corrupt manner.

The dirt is really everywhere, and the constitution is being torn up and trampled on every day, but a false image is given that things are going very well, especially every two years when there is massive political propaganda to convince people that there is a prosperous future, depositing only promises to the population.

Que País é Este and the slums

The favelas emerged in Brazil due to a major change in the population moving from the countryside to the city, not forgetting the end of slavery in this period, but also the desire of rich people not to live with poor people, who were mostly their employees, they did not want those people to share the same space as theirs, unless whenwere submissive and working for them.

Then the poor people were forced to leave that space and occupy other places, without many financial conditions they started to erect wooden shacks that piled up tightly and without many basic survival conditions.

Today much has been achieved in what we call community, but this system of exclusion and keeping people there, at the margin of society, remains.

Brazil is the country of the future

In this so-called democratic system, the same political system is maintained, in which the same candidates, their relatives, or people close to them repeat themselves, forgetting the necessary renewal in all areas; change brings transformation and renewal.

All discourse comes with words, which are so important in psychoanalysis, because they carry an enormous weight and an inestimable value for the communication of the human being, both the conscious and the unconscious are structured with words, but in the case of politicians this word no longer has any value, already becoming a joke to the population, which already associates politics with lies.

Brazil carries this stigma of a potentiality to become a developed country, but remains for all these years as underdeveloped, this developing itself seems to stop somewhere in the middle of this lying discourse brought by the rulers and by people in high positions such as those of the judiciary who verbalize beautiful words representing law and justice, but their actionsdemonstrate something else.

Devaluation of indigenous people and regional culture

Brazil is so rich in culture and miscegenation, this wonderful mixture with different cultures that goes from the North to the South of the country, deserves respect by all who live here as well as abroad, the following excerpt expresses a little of the indignation about this: "Third world if it's Jokes abroad"

"But Brazil will be rich We will make a million when we sell all the souls of our Indians at auction

Brazil ends up becoming a real joke abroad, scandal after political scandal is a sad joke, this also makes us think about the Indians and also about the Amazon, which is one of the most beautiful riches in the world, but mainly because it provides oxygen through its immense trees and a rich ecosystem with thousands of animal species.

What a country this is, extinction and deforestation

There is a movement of interest for its extinction and deforestation, where there is little investment in inspection and care.

The Indians to this day suffer from their lack of recognition and respect for their culture, which also belongs to all of us. Currently there is this movement of portrayal both in the history books and in social media in order to remove the part that the Portuguese discovered Brazil, in our land the Indians already inhabited long before, where the Europeans came and explored a lot from here takingSeveral riches such as the brazilwood tree, which today is very rare to find, the dye from which is used to dye fabrics and to make writing ink, gold and diamonds were also stolen in large quantities.

The disrespect today is still too big to respect the Indians who cultivate their traditional culture and their space, in which they have an enormous respect for nature and its preservation. Analyzing this disrespect comes what remains unspoken, but is very clear: the interests of exploiting these lands and bringing riches to a minority of people.

Final considerations

With psychoanalysis it is possible to analyze the social phenomena of today and correlate them with music; it is a way of reflecting what happens in society in a deep and meaningful way. The Brazilian context, the song makes sense with it, corruption currently extrapolates all possible limits and impunity for the so-called white collars remains. How can there be change if the laws that can change something pass through the vote of many who are corrupt and want this system to remain the same

Only from social pressure, from developing a sharper critical sense, and seeking practices of change and transformation, including of the political system, can there be a transformation. Respect for cultures that are different must be maintained in order to build a fair and united nation, as this can reduce the great social inequalities in our country.

In Brazil, many have little and few have much, and this intensifies every day, bringing with it hunger and violence that torment Brazilians every day.
