What is Oppression, Manifestations and Consequences

Oppression is the action of oppressing. Oppress means "to impose through force". As a psychic mechanism, in order to have the force of imposition, one side must have less force. See below for more information about what oppression is, because there are several origins and forms of oppression, such as: family, child, female, labor, social, etc. This is because it also exists as a belief, being assimilated especially in childhood.

Belief in violence

Some people are thankful for assaults they suffered as children, because "so" they didn't become "adult thugs". We can see, however, that "so" doesn't mean "only so".

In this way, phrases like this can also demonstrate living in an oppressive environment, a belief in oppression or admiration for aggression as a means to power.

With this belief, one can make misconceptions, such as supporting:

  • Ideas without reason;
  • Lack of preparation for functions;
  • Addiction to control and confusion;
  • Intolerance to what is different;
  • Pleasure with the suffering of the one placed as "minor".

We can remind ourselves that the way of learning with oppression is not the only way, nor the smartest way.

What is oppression in "double standards" belief

The philosopher Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) stated in his "Categorical Imperative" that we should act "as if every action is for all", as a universal truth. This is a question of Ethics.

There is a contrary belief in oppression: using different rules for different people. The same person who oppresses a vulnerable person who has no choice, can choose not to oppress according to interests.

Belief in people above any questioning in "what is oppression."

Another way of conveying oppression is through someone being pointed out as "even though they are wrong, they are right", therefore, through an enabling belief. One would have to remove that belief in order to evaluate, or evaluate other beliefs. This can be difficult when you have not learned to do it peacefully.

The belief in a type of oppression can be crystallized and even unconscious by starting as family patterns and being reinforced by the social. There is an aspect of privilege, idolatry or delusion about people whose oppression is permitted, among others, due to:

  • Family or social position;
  • Financial resources;
  • Fame
  • Victimization.

An oppressor can pose as a victim in order to gain moral strength and oppress. Thus, being a victim of something should not be a reason to generate abuse.

Slavish belief

This belief complements the previous one. It is well known that in the past the child was seen and treated as a "little adult" who "has to be something and put up with it, give work in return". Thus, many family relationships resembled a servile contract, which can still happen today, consciously or unconsciously.

The belief in this "servile contract" allows the sickness of the family system, the collective system, and even psychic conditions to pass without proper guidance. In such cases, those who suffer, in what is oppression, may not get listening to their suffering, even from therapists.

At the same time, an oppressor is not called upon to review attitudes. When necessary, he is not called upon for treatment by those responsible or by the collectivity, due to backward beliefs that "even if wrong, it is right".

Impacts

Oppression generates anguish, anxiety, and is associated with the most diverse conditions and disorders. Oppression results in various risks, aggressions to physical and psychological integrity, accidents, and illnesses all over the world, such as occupational illnesses, which are reflected in social spending on health.

Those who have suffered oppression will not know where their uneasiness comes from, how many perceptions, beliefs - also about themselves and others - have lost out to physical and emotional aggression from an oppressive system.

An oppressive environment can facilitate the appearance of depression, obsessive behavior, phobias, pain, and symptoms with a psychic background. With psychoanalysis, one can remember and work with oppressive situations, sometimes identifying these situations as the origin of psychic suffering.

Dysfunctional pattern and what is oppression

Some trained in oppression and self oppression may not even realize that the pattern of behavior is unhealthy, they have learned that life "just is that way". They did not learn emotional tools as children, such as taking care of self-esteem or thinking about the impact on others, interpersonal responsibility.

They may realize, however, that they are always in unhappy relationships, suffering devaluation or distress.

Oppressive homes

There are people who have assimilated the concept of oppression and repeat it, teaching it along, especially in their homes, when there is no effective supervision. In dysfunctional homes the "blame" for something often falls on some child.

Adults are unable to act in their roles without oppression, the child is directed to issues outside the child's reality, suffering exploitation or "adultization without rights". He/she may be boycotted in his/her tastes and activities and not be protected, in case of real risk. At the same time, she does not receive permission for actual adulthood, remains childlike in many ways, and stays within the oppressive realm.

In some cases the child may be ignored, isolated, or isolate himself within the family environment, or interpret that only by dealing with personalities like those in the original household will he have security.

Oppressed children can internalize an oppressor by identifying with him, and not knowing the limits. Or they can create psychic mechanisms to be throughout their lives always trying to satisfy an oppressor.

Oppressive habits

These habits are often not conducive to overall health. Sometimes we don't notice oppressive habits because they are allowed.

In the past, for example, people used to smoke in enclosed public places; today we know that establishments with this practice can be banned. This makes us think about adults who smoke when living with children, among other addiction issues.

We can see if there is an oppression of the child in these environments; after all, the child has a right to physical and emotional health, as well as the teaching of a healthy standard, which may not be guaranteed.

Violent society

Hardly a society is not a reflection of what goes on in its individual and family nuclei. To oppress the child is to be unfriendly to the child and to create groups, institutions, societies with an oppressive pattern.

The belief in oppression learned in the home goes out into the external environment. When there is violence and oppression outside, in a combination unfavorable to individuals, they turn to the family environment for security.

Thus, learned misconceptions about oppression can crystallize further, as in a system that feeds itself.

Crime and what is oppression

Oppression results in a wide range of physical and psychological conflicts and crimes, such as murder, injury, exploitation, coercion, harassment, parental alienation, theft, discrimination, defamation, moral damage, curtailment of freedom, stalking, etc.

Evolution

Emotional care creates an environment without oppression. It is good training to be naturally observing beliefs for self retraining, getting out of conflict lines and going the way of non-oppressive teaching.

To avoid oppression the child must be encouraged to express himself peacefully and to live in a stable environment. It is necessary, among others:

  • Recognize that every child has rights and should not be oppressed because he or she is less powerful;
  • Protect the child from oppression;
  • Continually reevaluate beliefs from previous generations about the oppression of the weakest;
  • Like to follow the child development Seeing the child as he is and not as you would like him to be;
  • Be for the child a living example of non-oppression.

For there to be well-being, one must believe and invest in it.
